Park Overview

Africa's Elephant Capital

Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya's most celebrated wildlife sanctuaries and for good reason. Even though it's one of Kenya's smallest major parks at just 392 km², it packs in some of the continent's most iconic wildlife viewing.

You'll come face-to-face with giant-tusked elephants you can get remarkably close to, observe lions and cheetahs on the open plains, and watch zebras and wildebeest wander against a backdrop that stops you in your tracks: the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m), Africa's tallest mountain, towering over the southern horizon in quiet, majestic permanence.

The park's open swampy landscape fed by underground streams from Kilimanjaro's snowmelt concentrates wildlife beautifully, making game drives exceptionally rewarding year-round.

Experiences

What Makes Amboseli Unforgettable

Amboseli delivers a concentration of experiences that few parks can match all within a compact landscape that means more time watching wildlife and less time driving between sightings.
Africa's Most Iconic Shot
Elephants in the foreground, the vast Amboseli wetlands behind them, and Kilimanjaro's snowcap floating above the clouds. Photographers travel continents for this single frame you'll capture it dozens of times.
Big-Tusked Elephant Families
Amboseli's elephants are among the most studied and most relaxed in Africa. Decades of low-threat contact means you can sit quietly metres from entire family groups going about their ancient rituals.
Observation Hill Panorama
Climb Observation Hill and watch the entire park lay itself out before you the shimmering seasonal lake, the papyrus swamps, distant dust clouds where elephants roam, and Kilimanjaro commanding the horizon.
400+ Bird Species
Pelicans, crowned cranes, African fish eagles, flamingos and saddle-billed storks are just the beginning. The diverse wetland and acacia habitats make Amboseli a world-class birding destination year-round.
Predator Action
Lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and leopards all inhabit the park. The open landscape means no hiding sightings here are extended, intimate, and unforgettable. Your guide knows every pride's territory.
Clear Kilimanjaro Mornings
The mountain is shy it hides in cloud by mid-morning. But dawn drives reward early risers with crisp, breathtaking views of Africa's roof, close enough to feel the altitude from 220km away.
Insider Tips

Prepare for Amboseli

🌅
Rise Before Dawn
Kilimanjaro cloud-free windows close quickly. Set your alarm early dawn drives (6–9am) offer the best mountain visibility and the most active predator behaviour.
👕
Pack Neutral Colours
Khaki, olive, tan. Avoid white and bright colours on game drives they spook wildlife and attract insects. A light fleece is essential for early morning drives.
📷
Bring a Long Lens
While Amboseli elephants are wonderfully close, a 300–500mm lens transforms landscape shots into portraits. Kilimanjaro is best captured with a wide angle for context.
💧
Stay Hydrated
Amboseli's altitude and dry-season heat demand at least 3L of water daily. Your safari vehicle carries drinking water on all drives never worry about going thirsty.
